However, I choose to feed my dog a raw diet instead because it’s healthier for them and contains more actual meat than any kibble could ever have.

Although Purina ONE has various formulas targeting all age groups of cats, the ingredients are mainly similar. The primary difference between Purina ONE formulas is the protein source. The primary protein source in Purina ONE formulas is chicken, turkey, or fish. However, there is also some meat by-product and grains such as corn and wheat.

I have used many Purina products over the years, but never their “premium” line. Recently, I decided to compare the price of the brand’s traditional dog food with the premium line. The difference was surprisingly small, so I thought I’d give it a try. My German Shepherd has been eating it for about three months now, and he likes it.

Cons of Purina One
Purina has a history of having high recalls, but they have since improved their manufacturing process and quality control. The only complaint I have about Purina is that they use rendered meat as an ingredient in some foods.
For example, Purina One and Cat Chow both have a chicken meal as one of their ingredients. Chicken meal is made from chicken parts left over after the slaughterhouse takes the prime cuts of meat. Chicken feet, heads, guts, etc., are all ground up together and then cooked under pressure to remove the moisture. This renders it down into a concentrated form of protein which is then sold to pet food companies.
Rendered meat makes me uncomfortable because there is no way to know where or how the animals used for the heart were raised, what parts of the animal were used, or even if those parts came from sick or diseased animals. It’s also easy for pet food companies to add euthanized dogs and cats into rendered meat without anyone knowing.

Ultimately, the best dog food for your pet will depend on your dog’s age, the size of its breed, any health conditions like upset stomach they may have, etc. So while this particular brand and flavor are not perfect, you should consider Purina One to be a quality food—and an excellent overall choice. However, don’t feel you’re limited solely to Purina—do some research and see what other brands (and flavors) may better suit your needs.
